What can I make using small pieces of scrap wood and wood shavings. I hate to see them go to waist.?

by admin on September 3, 2010

My boyfriend makes cabinet doors and has alot of scrap wood and wood shavings left over. We are wanting to come up with a way to recycle that wood and make something new. The pieces of wood are not very big at all and there are alot of wood shavings. But I just can’t think of a way to recycle it into something new. What would you do?

How about some back to nature – make bird houses/feeders, butterfly houses, bat houses, squirrel and chipmunk stations, etc. I’m sure you can find great plans on the Internet – but for someone who is talented enough to make cabinet doors – these projects would be a piece of cake – if you want you could paint and decorate them. if you make so many that your yard would look like a nature sanctuary – give them to a nursing home – patients can spend many hours watching the antics of birds etc.
I’m sure if you donate these wonderful projects the nursing home staff would put them up.
Thanks for recycling. And being a friend of nature, besides entertaining the elderly and infirmed.
PS. shavings are good nesting material, also good composting material for garden beds.

You can put the wood shavings into egg cartons with a small amount of wax. They can be used as firestarters for campers who make outdoor fires.

The small scrap wood can be bagged and sold for the same thing – a lot of people have firepits in their yards and need starter wood,

Particle board.

That’s what the big boys do.

It can be used in particle or press board or mixed with resin to make decking lumber….

You need to find a large woodworking shop, or saw mill and just take the leftovers there.

If the wood shavings are thin I would glue them on vases, picture frames etc. I’m not to sure about what you could use the scraps for.

Place some shavings and some dryer lint into the wells of a paper egg carton (foam won’t work). Melt some candle stubs in a double boiler and pour the melted wax into the filled wells-just enough to prevent the lint and shavings from escaping. Let the wax cool and harden.

ta-DAH! you now have 12 campfire starters. Just cut off a starter, put it under a pile of kindling in the fire pit, and light.

DO NOT use these in your inside fireplace, or you may have little rivers of burning melted paraffin running out of the hearth. And that would be bad.

if you have children or know someone who does ask if they want the small wood pieces to make a project. My son is always asking the neighbors for some leftover wood. He makes tiny cars, boats, airplanes and ramps for his little cars. I supervise with the cutting tools.
