Is it illegal to walk next to railroad tracks picking up scrap metal?

Is it illegal to walk next to railroad tracks picking up scrap metal as long as i”m not physically taking the railroad tracks apart? I’m guessing there’s probably a lot of scrap that falls from railcars.

people are more paranoid now than ever and doing something like picking up metal by railroad tracks are gonna raise suspicions.

yes, because you wouldn’t be able to prove otherwise.

No.

The area around the tracks is the property of the railroad company. To enter that area is trespassing and to take items from that area is stealing.

Yea, it’s owned by the railroad company. They will arrest you, sometimes shoot at you.

yes, it is illegal to even walk on railroad tracks weather your picking anything up or not. but I would not be to worried about it. as long as you don’t get caught try and avoid open areas where people from a busy road can easily see you. have a good one :)

one of my old friends went to jail over night because she was walking on a railroad track. usually you would probably just get a warning but some cops are extreme D*cks

You are trespassing. The railroad owns 6 feet of right-of-way on both sides of the track. I have picked up spent ties for landscape material, but I first had to go to their office, get permission, the location, and sign a waiver.

You’re trespassing. Tracks and the land around them are owned by the railroad companies.
